The highest finishing Moore CDL Driving Academy 360 Sprint in the 410 Sprint feature will not only reap the benefits of the highest bonus monies and points, but also a spot into the lucrative All-Star Dash to be held Friday, September 10 at Black Rock Speedway in Dundee, New York as part of the Bully Hill Vineyards Fall Nationals and a trophy to recognize his achievement. Beam Mack/Western Snow Plow is the new sponsor of the Dash, which boasts a $2,500 total purse. The 12-lap event will pay $500 to-win followed by $350-300-250-200-175-150-125-120-115-110-105. Tom has worked close with us to secure participation by the various sanctioning bodies in our 2004 events.” The second annual Ken Carbone Memorial will be presented by the Carbone Family of New Castle, Pa. Ken started his racing career in the early ‘60s and continued to be affiliated with the sport until his passing in 1997. He raced coupes and full-bodied cars. Although he was not a big winner, he loved the sport of auto racing like a champion. His numbers were 232 on the coupe and 20 on the full-bodied cars. His career slowed down due to an industrial accident at Youngstown Sheet and Tube in 1969. His legs were badly burnt and required skin grafts. This made it more difficult to get in and out of the cars. He would drive into the ‘70s and would later field cars for other drivers that included Bob Covelli. After his driving and owning days were over, Ken could be found in the pit area helping drivers Bob McCann, Tom Williamson, and Paul Rhodes. Ken Carbone was born on August 6, 1944 and passed away on November 6, 1997. Ken's love of racing was passed on to his four children and grandchildren who would like this opportunity to give back to the drivers who help keep the memories of their father alive with each and every week that they compete here at Mercer Raceway Park. All four feature winners will be given a plaque in memory of Ken. The Stock Car winner will receive a $200 bonus meaning he will take home $550. The top 10 finishers in each feature will be given tear-offs for their helmets. “This is a really nice gesture on the part of the Carbone Family to remember their father,” expressed Emig. “We are once again very proud to host this event in memory of one of our former racers. I know our drivers will really appreciate these extra bonuses provided by the Carbones.” Fans will have the opportunity to win a $25 dinner certificate from amongst the thousands that will be given away from the Texas Roadhouse. “The Texas Roadhouse is in their second year as a marketing partner and proud to have their quality establishment on board,” stated Emig. “These are great giveaways that they are providing for both our drivers and fans throughout the season.” It will be another Grove City Auto Mall “Meet Your Heroes” Night as the Strictly Stocks will bring their cars behind the grandstands for autographs from 6-6:30 p.m. The first 400 fans will receive a free color autograph card. Gamblers Raceway Park Race Results for July 25th
Chad Ruhlman of Bemus Point, NY, invaded Gamblers Raceway Park on Sunday afternoon and picked up his biggest win of this career winning the $5004 “Throw of the Dice Classic” sponsored by Budweiser and Errigo Distributing. Other winners on this special day were Doug Tibbens of Curwensville in the Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub Street Stocks and Levi Ardery of West Decatur in the D& B Tires Four Cylinders and Jason Bainey of Philipsburg in the Fred Diehl’s of Philipsburg Pure Stocks. Sammy Stiles and Ruhlman set the pace in the 50 lap Super Late Model headlining main event. At the waving of the green flag, Stiles took command of the twenty-two car field and led for the first 22 laps. While leading, Stiles had to endure seven minor cautions for spun cars throughout his lead. While working lap 23, Stiles ran the low groove, Ruhlman ran the high groove and got past Stiles with a lighting quick move to take the lead. Once out in the lead Ruhlman, only had to bear a restart on lap 27 for a spinning Bobby Stokes, as the field went green the rest of the way. Ruhlman was making things look easy by running his patented high groove, the real battle was for second place between Stiles, Bob Close and the hard charging Alan Dellinger, who started eighteenth. The three had the crowd on the edge of their seat as they bobbed and weaved among themselves for the next ten laps. At the waving of flagman Mike Frisco double checker flags. It was Ruhlman, Stiles, Close, Dellinger and Steve Everhart. Heat winner for the 29 Super Late Models in attendance were Stiles, Ruhlman, Close and David Scott. Consolation winners were Dellinger and George Fultz. The 15 lap street stock feature was paced in the early going by Port Matilda’s Tom Homan. Then on lap 3, Hyde’s Jamie Price got by Homan and lead until a lap 7 five car pile up in turn two slowed the seventeen car field ending the night for Emory Rinehart Jr. and Dan Smeal. On the restart, Tibbens blew by Price and never looked back to score his first victory at Gamblers this year. Making their first appearance at the track in over two years the Four Cylinder division had fourteen cars in the starting grid. On the opening lap, Bells Landings, Ken Erskine, took the lead but he was quickly over taken by the speedy Levi Ardery. Once out in front Ardery had to sit out front for three minor cautions for the win. The always entertaining Pure Stocks were the last feature of the evening and once again it was the Bainey cousins of Philipsburg putting on a show. Craig Bainey led the first lap before being overtaken by Todd Bainey. Todd lead for two laps but then was passed by Grassflat’s, Kevin Clark. Clark and Jason Bainey battled bumper to bumper, side by side, for the next six laps before Clark pitted with car troubles. This gave Jason Bainey sole possession of the lead and held off his two cousins for his fourth win of the season at the ¼ mile oval. Notes: The twenty-eight year old Ruhlman is an E-Mod driver at Eldora Speedway. At intermission, Late Model driver, David Scott rolled the dice to determine the starting grid. Scott rolled an odd three which made the field start straight up. Dropping out early were fan favorites, Robbie Blair and Dick Barton. Next week at Gamblers Raceway Park will be double features for Micros, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks and Wild Cards plus regular features in the same divisions plus Super Late Models and a visit by the Eastern Museum of Motorsports with their antique race cars. All the racing action starts at 6:30, general admission is $9, kids fifteen and under free with an adult. ROD GEORGE, REX KING, BRENT RHEBERGEN AND BOBBY WHITLING WIN AGAIN AT TRI-CITY SPEEDWAY; GARY SMOKER TRIUMPHS IN SPORTSMAN MODS; DOUBLE FEATURES FOR THUNDERCARS ON AUG. 1
by Brian Spaid July 25, 2004 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FRANKLIN, PA … Despite light rain showers throughout, Tri-City Speedway hosted a stellar show on Sunday night as Rod George (Northpointe Automotive Super Sprints), Rex King (Schwab's Ford DIRT Modifieds), Brent Rhebergen (RPM Auto Sales/Shawgo Real Estate E Mods), Gary Smoker (Bossard Crawford Sportsman Modifieds) and Bobby Whitling (E.F. Rogers Plumbing & Heating Pro Stocks) won the feature events on Joy Employee Fund Night at the Venango County half-mile oval. The Thundercar feature was rained out near the end of the show, and will be run next week. Rod George of Kittanning, Pa., raced to his second win of the season in the 20-lap Super Sprint feature. The two-time defending track champion actually appeared to be heading for a second place finish before local favorite Rob Eyler ran out of fuel with three circuits remaining. “Rob was really strong tonight and he took away my low line on those restarts,” said George beside his Mike Wilt Racing Gambler No. 4 after his 27th career win at Tri-City. “He started to slow there, and we just got past him. We’ve had some bad luck this season, and we just need to build some consistency and get some race wins under our belt.” Andy McKisson led the first lap of the race before George moved into the lead. After starting eighth, Eyler was running third at the end of the first lap. The first three circuits were marred by three cautions, including two spins by Cameron Dodson, with the second incident collecting Mike Kaminski, who flipped Dr. Bob Altmeyer’s sprinter in the second turn. Kaminski was uninjured, but both cars were eliminated from the race. A total of five cautions slowed the action, which played havoc with at least one team that decided to run a lower fuel load. Eyler dashed to the outside of George on the fourth circuit to take command. Eyler held off George’s advances as Bobby Clark and point leader Jarod Larson weaved their way through traffic. By the halfway point, Eyler led George, Clark, Larson and McKisson. They continued to run in that order until Eyler began to slow on the 16th circuit. He finally ran out of fuel heading down the backstretch one lap later, and George dodged Eyler’s slowing car. George led the final three laps to win over Clark, Larson, Jody Keegan and Jason Jacoby. Keegan and Jacoby inherited fourth and fifth on the final lap when McKisson and Todd Bauer tangled in the second turn and spun to the outside of the track. Jacoby and Dodson won the Super Sprint heats. Rex King of Bristolville, Ohio, collected his first win of the 2004 season in the 20-lap DIRT Modified feature. Driving his King Bros. Ready Mix/ALLTEL/Cintas Uniform Bicknell No. 65, King took the lead on the third circuit from Josh Skarzenski, and fended off the 2002 track champion for his fourth career win at Tri-City. King also earned an extra $100 in Coors DIRT Modified Bonus Bucks. “We watched the sprints blow a little dust off the track during their race and decided to change a few things before we went out, and they worked,” smiled King. “We’ve got a few seconds and thirds this season, and we just couldn’t get that win. Now, we’ve got it and we can make a run at the title.” Skarzenski beat defending track champion Del Rougeux Jr. into the first corner at the drop of the green, but King was right behind Skarzenski at the start. King raced outside Skarzenski to take the lead on the third circuit. Despite this move, Skarzenski continued to dog King while running the low groove. On the sixth circuit, Rougeux spun in turn two while running fourth. Joe Crawford ran into Rougeux’s front end, which knocked Rougeux out of the race and a possible bid for a second title. On the restart, King needed about one circuit to outdistance Skarzenski leaving him to battle with point leader Andy Priest. Over the final half of the race, Skarzenski and Priest traded the second position four times before Skarzenski secured runner-up honors in his best race of the season. Priest maintained his point lead over King with a third place finish ahead of Chanda Reitz and Kevin Bolland. Rougeux and Skarzenski won the DIRT Modified heat races. Brent Rhebergen of Clymer, NY, continued his dominance in the E Mod class as he scored his sixth win of the season in the 15-lap feature. Taking the lead on the second circuit, Rhebergen cruised to victory in Bruce and Kathy Steadman’s Sharp Tool & Die Pierce No. 69. It was the 39th career E Mod win for Rhebergen at Tri-City. “Bob Pierce was here last Sunday and it rained out, so we were all disappointed,” said Rhebergen. “We actually dodged the raindrops on Monday afternoon and got a few laps in with some of the Pierce guys. He was really impressed. The car is perfect, and the crew did another great job.” While Rhebergen raced out front, all eyes watched the battles throughout the rest of the top five. Jim Frontz moved into second on the fourth circuit passing early race leader Kari Gasser. Shawn Shingledecker and point leader Mike Potosky had a stirring battle for third in the latter stages of the race after they each passed Gasser. Shingledecker traded the position with Potosky twice. In the end, Rhebergen topped Frontz, Shingledecker, Potosky and Gasser for the win. Rhebergen, Potosky, Shawn Domhoff and Aurie Weaver collected a total of $200 extra in purse money posted by the division sponsors, RPM Auto Sales and Shawgo Real Estate. Rhebergen and Domhoff won the E Mod heat races. In the division’s only appearance of the 2004 season, Gary Smoker of Mercer, Pa., captured the 15-lap Sportsman Modified feature. Smoker took the lead on the 11th lap from Jeff Walters, and raced to his third career win at Tri-City in his Flexospan/Eastern Inc. Bicknell No. 516. It was Smoker’s first win at the track since April 25, 1999. The race was originally slated as part of the 50th Anniversary Celebration on July 4th. “First, I’d like to thank the Lord Jesus Christ for getting me here,” said Smoker. “Without him I wouldn’t be able to do this. Jeff ran a good race. I managed to find a hole under him there, and took the lead. I’d like to thank Tri-City for giving us a date to run here.” The competitive race found Steve Toth out front at the start. The second generation racer led the first six circuits while Smoker and Walters dueled for second. On the seventh lap, first Walters passed Toth for the lead, then Smoker grabbed second. Smoker challenged the former Pro Stock racer relentlessly before Smoker took the lead on with four laps to go. Once out front, Smoker was unbeatable as he collected his sixth win overall on the Sportsman Modified circuit. Walters finished second over Toth, Mike Anderson and Marty Kristyak. D.J. Schrader was originally scored fourth; however, a carburetor violation resulted in his disqualification. Smoker and Jerry Schaffer won the Sportsman Modified heats. Bobby Whitling of Seneca, Pa., scored his third feature win in a row in the 15-lap Pro Stock main. Taking command on the ninth circuit, Whitling outraced his main rival Bruce Smith to earn his fourth win of the 2004 season and the 36th win of his illustrious career at Tri-City. “The track had a lot of bite tonight,” said Whitling in victory lane with his Ted Karns Specialty Construction Chevrolet No. 7W. “I knew Bruce was there at the end. There is a great points battle shaping up for the end of the season.” Former DIRT Modified driver Gerry Bruce led the first six circuits of the race while some of the best Pro Stock drivers battled with him running two and three wide. Doug Iorio was the main contender, and Iorio and Whitling both made it around Bruce on the seventh circuit. Iorio and Whitling continued the lead battle for two more circuits before they came upon the lapped car of John Sutley, who recovered from a turn two spin and was running slow enough that the leaders caught him. Iorio went high while Whitling went low. Racing down the frontchute, Iorio made contact with Sutley, which knocked Iorio out of the race continuing his bad luck streak. Whitling took command and led the rest of the way despite a late-race challenge from Smith, who fell back to sixth at one time during the race following a slight mishap entering turn four too high on the eighth circuit. Dave Ferringer finished third over Russ Coyne and Jason Johns. Mike Clark, Smith and Iorio won the Pro Stock heat races. The Thundercar feature came onto the track during victory lane ceremonies for the E Mod feature in an effort to combat a heavier rain shower. It was to no avail, and track officials decided to run the race one week later. The feature lineup is listed below. Despite the rain, Jeff Simpson of Utica, Pa., won the 35-car Lowry Auto Wrecking Demo Derby for his first career victory. Tri-City Speedway continues with its 50th Anniversary season next Sunday August 1st with another special six-division show featuring the return of the Bossard Crawford Late Models to the track after the rainout of their event on July 4th and 18th. The Late Models will join the Northpointe Automotive Super Sprints, Schwab's Ford DIRT Modifieds, RPM Auto Sales/Shawgo Real Estate E Mods, E.F. Rogers Plumbing & Heating Pro Stocks, and Victory Lane Graphics Thundercars on Goss Gas/Lincoln Welders Night. The Thundercars will run double features. KENT’S MISFORTUNES ALLOW EYLER & SMITH TO TAKE WINGLESS & WINGED SPRINT MAINS; BULL SWEEPS MIDGET FEATURES FOR HIS FIRST WINS; EPERTHENER & HOOKS DOUBLE CAREER WIN TOTALS WITH SPORTSMAN & STOCK WINS; #10 FOR BISH, SR. IN STRICTLYS AT MERCER
By Mike Leone July 24, 2004 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Mercer, PA…Mercer Raceway Park hosted “Wingless – The Return/Part IV Plus” presented by American Agip Saturday night as the preliminaries and seven-feature program was spun off in just over four hours. Scoring wins and celebrating in the McClung Auto Body victory lane were Rob Eyler-Luxaire Heating & Cooling Wingless Sprint Cars, Jamie Smith-Luxaire Heating & Cooling Winged Sprint Cars, Ray Bull-ARDC Wingless & Winged Midget Cars, Ron Eperthener, Jr.-Tire Express Sportsman Modifieds, Shaun Hooks-Stock Cars, and Curt Bish, Sr.-Maurer’s Trading Post Strictly Stocks. Just days after winning his heat race and qualifying for his first ever World of Outlaws feature, Rob Eyler recorded his first win of the season and first ever without a wing in the 20-lap Luxaire Heating & Cooling Sprint Car feature. “The car was great,” exclaimed the Franklin, Pa. winner. “I want to thank Ralph Quarterson. He set us up in the pits, gave us a great setup, and it worked. If it wasn’t for him, I’m not experienced enough in these cars.” Arnie Kent raced into the lead at the start with Eyler and Jamie Smith racing past Gary Edwards. The trio began to distance themselves from the field by lap four. On the fourth lap, Kent got high allowing Eyler to take the lead in turn two, but was saved when Butch Beasley spun bringing out the caution. When racing resumed, Kent raced out into the lead. The laps ticked off with Eyler and Smith hounding Kent. Traffic came into the play on laps 12 and 13 making it into a three-car race again. Rod George, who was making just his second non-winged start, passed Edwards for fourth on lap 14. Kent appeared as if he was going to be able to hold on, but lost the handle on lap 18 and spun to bring out the caution. When racing resumed, George began to challenge Smith for second as he got under the point leader in turn four coming down for the white flag only to get sideways and lose the handle. Eyler was able to hold on for his fifth career win in his White Heating/J.I. McCall Construction/World of Wheels-sponsored #5a. Smith, Edwards, Scott Bonnell, and Andy Priest in the Randy Kriegisch #63 were second through fifth. Jason Dolick was sixth in his first ever non-winged start and received the 360 bonus. Rounding out the top 10 were Jeff Banyas, Scott Priester, George, and Charlie Holben. Bonnell and Edwards won the heats over the 17-car field. It just wasn’t to be for Arnie Kent Saturday night. After spinning while leading the first feature, Kent appeared to be headed to the win in the 20-lap winged feature only to get high on the 19th lap allowing Jamie Smith to score the victory. “That had to be pretty exciting the last couple laps,” stated the Sewickley, Pa. winner after his fourth triumph of the year. “I was hanging back in third, then things worked out in the end. Arnie go off the track and I think I caught Rod by surprise.” An invert 14 saw Butch Beasley race into the early lead with Kent trailing. Beasley got high off turn four on lap three allowing Kent, Gale Ruth, Jr., Chad Levingston, and George by for the first four positions. George moved ahead of Levingston for third on lap four then grabbed runner-up from Ruth on lap nine. At the halfway mark, Kent had opened up a straightaway lead on George. Smith, who started 13th, made his way to third on lap 10 getting around Ruth just before Levingston brought out the final caution. When racing resumed, George and Kent raced side-by-side on laps 12 and 13 as Kent was able to maintain his lead. Traffic seemed to work to the benefit of Kent as he ran the top, while George stuck to the bottom. Coming down for the white flag, Kent slipped high off turn four allowing George and Smith to fly by. Smith was now right on George and drove under the veteran on the backstretch to steal the victory. Smith’s milestone 30th career Mercer win came in American Agip/NAPA Auto Parts/Alternative Power Sources-sponsored #5G. George, Kent, Banyas, and Edwards were second through fifth. Sixth through tenth were Bonnell, Eyler, Ruth, Holben, and Priest. Last year it was Ed Stimely, Jr. sweeping both portions of the ARDC Midget Car features; this year the honor went to Ray Bull as he captured both the 20-lap wingless and winged feature for his first ever Mercer wins. The wingless feature win came much easier as he took the lead from Carey Belker on the opening lap and led every lap. “We had a good starting spot because we’ve crashed two of the last three races,” acknowledged the Bloomsburg, Pa. racer. “I ran the wheels off the thing until a couple to go and I was hoping nobody was coming. It began to run hot and I started to backpedal. This place has snake-bitten us the last couple times we’ve come here. It’s one of my favorite places to race.” Bull’s Mega Motorsports #22 was never seriously challenged as he took the checkered flag first in a race that had only two cautions. Mike Miller, who started 11th, charged to the front and claimed second after getting around Dave Shirk on the final lap for second. Shirk then spun off turn four on the last lap moving Steve Buckwalter, Michele Miller, and Stimely into positions three through five. The winged 20-lapper was over almost before it started as only one caution slowed action, which came on the final lap. Steve Lenig raced into the lead at the start, while Bull’s run to the front began from the 12th starting spot. Bull took third from Belker on lap nine and second from Michele Miller on lap 10. Bull ran down Lenig on laps 11 and 12 before putting a slider on the leader through turns three and four on lap 12. Bull then pulled away for his eighth win of the season. Mike Miller was second for the second straight race as daughter Michele Miller trailed over Buckwalter and Shirk. “The car is working great,” expressed Bull following his double. “It’s a tribute to the crew. Two weeks ago we destroyed this car and broke every piece on it. We thought the frame was junk, but the crew went to work and bent it back into shape. I love this place! The fans are great here. It’s a professional place. It’s really nice to pull in here with the clean image and a beautiful track. It’s a credit to everyone that works here.” After going seven years between wins, Ron Eperthener, Jr. captured his third win in the past seven events in the 20-lap $600 to-win Tire Express Sportsman Modified feature. “We’ve been working real good,” said the Grove City, Pa. winner. “Rick (Hall) showed me his car- he was pushing me hard. We got lucky and hung in there. Walt Stearns is helping me with tires and it makes all the difference in the world because we can keep new tires on.” Jim Rombold, Jr. took the advantage at the start over Eperthener. Following a restart with two laps completed, Eperthener took over from Rombold. Gary Smoker had made his way from sixth to second, but spun in turn four on lap five causing a melee. This moved Rick Hall to second for the restart. Hall pressured Eperthener for the duration getting under the leader on numerous occasions, but wasn’t able to get by. Eperthener has doubled his career win total this year with his sixth career win in his Ron Eperthener, Sr.-owned, Eperthener Auto Wrecking #333. Jeff Schaffer had another strong run in third after starting 11th to maintain his point lead and perfect streak of top fives. Brother Jerry Schaffer came from 20th to finish fourth over Jeff Walters. Topping the heats over the 25-car field were Mike Turner, Jeff Schaffer, and Hall. Andy Priest won the B main. Shaun Hooks continued his stellar season by picking up his fourth win in the 20-lap $600 to-win Eric Young Memorial for Stock Cars presented by Snyder Pontiac. “I’m running on all borrowed parts tonight,” revealed the New Castle, Pa. victor. “My carburetor didn’t work in the heat so I borrowed my cousin’s and took his tires, so this is all for him.” Making his first start, Gerry Bruce led the first two circuits before Rick Norco took over. Terry Kroner stole runner-up from Bruce on lap nine then worked his way past Norco into the lead on lap 11. Hooks, who started 10th, grabbed second from Norco on lap 13. With five laps to go, seven cars were in contention for the win racing in a pack. Hooks’ winning move came on the 14th circuit when he drove under Kroner for the lead. Hooks led the rest of the way and doubled his Mercer career win total this year with his eighth career win in his Rich & Freed Auto Parts/Benny Lombardo Auto Repair/Jim Hooks Auto Repair-sponsored #65. Kroner edged 15th starting Andy Buckley for second. Andy Thompson and Doug Iorio were fourth and fifth. Dave Ferringer, Tim Deutsch, and Iorio topped the heat races over the 29-car field. Gary Johns won the B main. One race after the Bishs’ perfect streak ended in the Maurer’s Trading Post “Redneck Racers Shotgun Series”, Curt Bish, Sr. returned to victory lane for the 10th time in the 12-lap Strictly Stock feature. Randy Ealy held the top spot for the first seven laps before Curt Bish, Jr. made the pass for the lead. On lap 11, Lauren Simmons spun off turn four and collected Bish, Jr. This handed the lead to Titusville, Pa’s Curt Bish, Sr., who led the final two laps for the win in his Dennis Baker Construction/A&C Buffet-sponsored #00. Curt Bish, Jr. came back to place second over Joe Blake, Ryan Boyd, and Wearne Cook. Luxaire Heating & Cooling Wingless Sprint Cars: 1. ROB EYLER 2. Jamie Smith 3. Gary Edwards 4. Scott Bonnell 5. HANNA AND CURTIS CLAIM THEIR FIRSTS,
LYNCH , WELLER JR and (Hartford, OH – July 24, 2004) After rain washed out last week’s events, drivers and fans alike were more than ready to get the racing action underway at Sharon Speedway as Christmas in July was celebrated. Exactly 150 cars filled the pit area, 55 of which were in the City Disposal Pure Stock division alone. Santa was on hand to give out over $4000 in gifts to adults and children, in addition to the Cable Guys race where a brand new go-kart, a trip to the Michigan Nextel race and gift certificates to Nadine’s Trading Post were given away to lucky fans! In the Sunburst Environmental Sprint Division, Brent Matus and Chad Hill started in the front row. Matus surprised the huge throng of race fans by taking charge and leading the first seven laps using the bottom groove. Hill might have chosen the wrong tires as his sprinter was very loose chasing Matus. Eighth place starter, and current point leader, Ed Lynch Jr. used a softer Hoosier that grabbed hold and pushed the Apollo Rocket to the lead by lap 8 with an outside pass off turn four. Andy McKisson, Jarod Larson and 16 year old Cameron Dodson from Greenfield, Indiana were involved in a turn four mishap, sending all three drivers to the pits for the evening. On the restart, Lynch opened up a large lead, only to have that diminished with an 18th lap yellow. Hill was no match for Lynch as Ed went on to post win number three. Hill brought home second, with Jason Jacoby third, Josh Skarzenski fourth and Mike Kekich fifth. Heats were won by Dodson, Lynch and Kekich. Shawn Minor won the consi. The Gibson-Governer Insurance Modifieds answered the call for their 25-lap feature racing with 25 cars on the starting grid. The front row was made up of Josh Skarzenski and Ron Kristyak who led the charge during laps 1 and 2 respectively. Rob Curtis maneuvered out front by the third circuit. Curtis outclassed his fellow competitors, surviving cautions on laps 3 and 18. During the final seven laps, Curtis kept telling himself “to keep calm” as he found victory lane for the first time in a big block modified, and his first-ever win at Sharon Speedway. Kevin Bolland worked his way forward to finish second from his tenth starting spot. Point leader, Jim Weller Jr., Rob Kristyak and Josh Skarzenski finished third through fifth. Jim Weller Jr., Brian Swartzlander and Kevin Bolland won the heats. City Disposal Service Pure Stock drivers fought through five heat races and 2 consolation races to qualify for the 24-car A-main. Mike Clark and Bill Hanna showed the way after 2 complete restarts. From green to checker, Hanna and Clark swapped the lead several times before Hanna won his first feature of the season. Clark finished a close second as point leader, Steve D’Apolito, restarted 19th and finished third! Fourth went to Dan Lewis and Ray Yuran completed the top five. Heats winners were Hanna, Jeff Kravic, D’Apolito, Larry Root and Lewis. Consi winners were Will Aley and Danny Exley. The Green Flag Sprint division debuted tonight, with 6 cars making up the field for their 15-lap feature event. Former modified driver, Guy Griffin, was just one of the drivers exited to get the series underway. The sealed engine division costs less than half of what most 410 sprint owner have invested in their machines, and provide for an economical, yet competitive form of sprint racing. Skip Daugherty and Jimmy Weller III paced the group to the initial green. Alan “I’ll Never Drive a Sprint Car” Dellinger found his machine battling Weller throughout the entire race, only to finish second to winner, Weller. Modified driver, Jim Rasey, also tried his skills in the sprint and finished third, with Daugherty fourth and Maria Mayerchak fifth. Griffin and Mayerchak got together going into turn 3, giving Griffin a left rear flat and sending him to the pits. Griffin, however, won the heat. The Coy Brothers Trucking Emods 15-lap feature starting very rough as ten cars were involved in a pile-up in turn 3 before the first lap was completed. Ken Smith and Shawn Shingledecker started side-by-side on the front row, taking the initial green. Smith was one of the ten cars involved, sending him to the tail of the field. Shingledecker held the top spot until a restart on lap 8. Jeff Sharp used the high lane to dart into the lead. By lap nine, point leader, Carl McKinney, moved into second from ninth, pressuring Sharp. The challenge rattled Sharp as his machine bobbled in turn 4 allowing McKinney to pass underneath with just 2 laps remaining. McKinney held on for his second victory as Sharp, Shingledecker, Rich Stiffler and Scott Stiffler followed across the finish line. Heats went to Rich Stiffler, Jim Bickerstaff Jr., and McKinney. Howard Fraley won the consi. Coming up next week, on Wednesday, July 28th, the World of Outlaw sprints return for their second and final visit to Sharon Speedway for the 2004 season. Fans can still get reserved seats in advance and save $$ by calling the track office at 330-772-1186 or ordering online at www.sharonspeedway.com. Then, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, (July 30, 31 and August 1), racers have the night off while the Monster Jam rolls back into town! Grave Digger, War Wizard, Destroyer and Rap Attack will all be here, along with Quad Wars. Tickets purchased in advance are just $10 and can be obtained at the Speedway, by calling the ticket office at 330-772-1186, or at Warren Harley-Davidson (Warren, OH), ClearChannel Radio Station CD 93 (South Avenue in Boardman, OH) or Hermitage (PA) Shop ‘n Save.
